PREFACE

The authentic source of the cantata is the part material consisting of 31 parts and written partly by Bach himself. On the cover of the parts the date "1714, the third Sunday after Trinity" is also in his hand which probably referred to the first performance. Later the composer modified, corrected and made additions to the cantanta several times and he also loosened its liturgical restrictions by entering the note per ogni tempo (for any time—that is, for any day of the ecclesiastical year). The cantata received its final form in Leipzig where it was first performed on June 13th, 1723 shortly after Bach's official installation. The original parts, on which the present edition is based, contain all of Bach's modifications (e.g. the use of trombones in the ninth movement), thus they agree with the final Leipzig version.
When compiling the present score the only problem emerged in connection with the drums since their parts are lost or probably never existed at all. The orignal title of the cantata was „Concerto a 13, per 3 Trombone, Tarn-buri, 1 Oboe, 2 Violini e Viola, Fagotto e Violoncello, 4 Voci con Continuo di J. 5. Bach". It is, however, surprising to find more performers listed than the main title includes. It is conceivable that the composer did not deem the participation of Tamburi (evidently kettledrums) compulsory or he simply left it to the drummer to improvise. In some of the later editions attempts were made to supply a timpani part which, in our opinion, is incompatible with the demand of authenticity, thus this practice was not followed here. In performance the final movement can be easily completed, if desirable, with some kettledrum beats to support the trumpets. The order of instruments follows the later established practice (from top to bottom: woodwinds — brass — voices — strings and continuo). According to the original parts the continuo is usually played by the cello, the double bass and the organ except in movements 3, 8 and 10 where the double bass is omitted; in movements 4 and 7, however, the bassoon also joins in the continuo.

The text of movements 2, 6 and 9 is based on biblical psalms, that of the 11th (final) movement on the Revelations of St. John while the others can be attributed to some German poet contemporary to Bach, probably to Salomon Franck.

Weichet nur, betrübte Schatten

Kantate BWV 202
für Solo-Sopran, Oboe, Streichorchester und Basso continuo
Herausgegeben von Karl Schleifer
GDR, Leipzig

Inhalt Contents:

(Schweitzer)
